In this post, we’ll explain everything you need to know about Ebikes

By now, most people have already heard about electric bicycles (ebikes). Whether you ride a traditional bicycle (bike) or not, you have probably asked yourself the question – are ebikes worth it?

How Are Ebikes Different?

To better understand if ebikes are worth it, you need to have an understanding of some of the key differences between conventional bikes and e-bikes.  Here they are:

Mechanics And Appearance – the first thing that you will notice bout ebikes is how similar they appear to traditional bikes. Most people compare ebikes to electric scooters, but ebikes are really more like traditional bikes in many ways.

This is because the electrical driving system in an ebike is the only real noticeable difference from a traditional bike. The electrical driving system includes features like the display screen (not present in all models), battery, and motor.

With a traditional bike, you pedal and the bike moves forward.

With an ebike, a battery powers the motor, and the motor provides power and acceleration as you pedal. This aids in moving the bicycle forward.

Traditional bikes and ebikes have similar bike wheels, handlebars, and frames. The mechanical components, including the pedals and brakes, operate identically.

Repairs And Maintenance – An ebike has all of the same standard parts as a traditional bike. This means that maintaining the core components of both traditional bikes and ebikes are identical.

Your maintenance schedule is relatively the same for an ebike as a traditional bike, from weekly upkeep to yearly repairs and services. In fact, you can use the same neighborhood conventional bike repair shop for repairs if something goes wrong with the parts on an ebike, such as the wheels or brakes. Also, the repair cost is about the same for an ebike as a traditional bike.

However, if there is a problem with the ebike’s motorized components, you will need the assistance of an ebike specialist or the ebike’s manufacturer to service these components. Fortunately, electrical system problems are rare, and most ebike manufacturers have a warranty that cover repairs of those components.

Riding Experience – Riding an ebike is very similar to riding any other type of bike. The best part about riding an ebike is that you still get exercise while having a little motorized help getting over hills and reaching higher speeds!

When you hop on an ebike and begin peddling, the motor will assist you until you reach a certain speed. Cycling still requires effort, but using an ebike makes it seem a lot easier.

The motor’s pedal assist feature can also be adjusted up or down, affecting how much effort you will put into pedaling the ebike. Your legs will do the majority of the work if you set the pedal assist mode to the lowest level. If you turn the pedal assist up to its highest setting, you can still pedal, but you’ll be moving much faster because the motor will be doing most of the work.

Ebike Speeds

We cover how fast electric bikes will go in another blog post, but we’ll go ahead and tell you that the average top speed is between 20 to 30MPH depending the type of ebike, specifications and any government restrictions that limit the ebike’s top speed. For some models of ebikes, the motor will slow down or shut off if you reach the local speed limit.

Ebikes are designed to help you get to where you are going faster while still giving you the benefit of exercise. The ebike’s pedal assist feature will help you maintain a consistent speed and momentum while coasting. However, Ebikes are made for leisurely cycling, not setting speed records in competitions.

Common Types Of Ebikes

Just like traditional bikes, there are different types of ebikes as well. We’ll discuss each one below:

Ebike Cruiser
Ebike Cruiser
  • Cruiser / Comfort – this type of ebike is made for recreational riders who are occasional riders and prioritize comfort and control over long-distance touring. You will have a great time sightseeing while sitting erect in a very comfortable saddle. These ebikes are perfect for making quick trip to the store, riding on the beach or getting a little exercise most anywhere. The classic diamond-shaped frame and the “Step Through” frame are the two frame types available in this category.  The “Step Through” frame makes mounting and dismounting the bicycle quick and simple. The Step-Through frame is ideal for anyone with a disability that might prevent them from elevating their leg.
Ebike Commuter
  • Commuter / Hybrid – this type of ebike is made to travel far and fast. It is perfect for traveling around town, commuting to work or getting a little cardio. These ebikes often have the greatest range; some have a top speed of up to 28 mph! Many models will include a rack system if you want to carry food, a laptop, and other stuff.
Mountain Ebike
Mountain Ebike
  • Off-road / Mountain – this type of ebike is intended for off-road riding on trails that will give you the power you need to move thru dirt and gravel with less effort than just pedaling. Off-road ebikes climb hills like billy goats and make descents a lot more fun thanks to their pedal assist capabilities. With this type of e-bike, the battery and motor are usually positioned at the center. This allows for a lower center of gravity and a centered weight. As a result, they are more stable, maneuverable, and fun. However, the knobby tires may slow you down a bit on the pavement.

Conclusion: So Are Ebikes Worth It?

Ebikes definitely have their advantages over traditional bicycles. One glaring downside of e-bikes is that they are more costly than conventional bicycles. Although they cost more initially, ebikes are worth it in the end!
